Tips2UsSaveThem--New Blog offering tips to help animals

Inline Image

Tips2UsSaveThem  is a new web site and blog that offers information for dog wardens, the public, and wildlife officers in order to allow all of them to help animals.  This site lists the dog wardens to contact in Ohio counties if you have an issue concerning dogs in need.  The site also offers helpful info on what to use to neutralize skunk odors on your pet and how to make a homemade repellent to keep stray cats out of your yard. Additionally, the site plans to offer links to area rescues and rescues that are breed specific. Please check it out!! We would like to thank Deputy Sheriff Gary Kronk for getting involved with this project.  He is the dog warden for Madison County and a true friend to cats (and dogs)! To contact Deputy Kronk on issues in Madison County, email him at dogwarden@madisonsheriff.org or call 740-852-1212 or 740-845-1749. Dog wardens sometimes get a bum rap and Deputy Kronk is helping change that.

Stretch and Scratch cat scratchers work great for PetSmart kitties!

Inline Image

There is an excellent product for kitties waiting to get adopted that we recently purchased and started using at the PetSmart on Sawmill. They are smaller sized cardboard cat scratchers that can be attached to the bars of the cages.  We put one in each of the cages for all the kitties at PetSmart. The cats love them.  They can reach out and scratch and it helps relieve boredom. If you would like to find out more about them, go to www.stretchandscratch.com  You can order a case of them for $85 and donate them to your favorite organization.  The cats are scared and stressed being in cages and this really helps them.  Plus, it teaches kittens to use a scratching pad so they will know to do that and eliminate an adopter's desire to declaw.

Latest issue of The National Audobon Society's magazine, Audubon, slams Trap-Neuter-Return

Inline Image

In the latest issue of Audubon magazine (September 2009), "Independent advocate for the environment" (his choice of a title), Ted Williams writes in his "Incite" column about TNR, Trap-Neuter Return.  To read the article, "Felines Fatales" online, go to http://audubonmagazine.org  The article does not advocate TNR, but I'll let you read it yourself and decide what you think.  Here is one quote from the article: "In ru ral areas where feral cats are killing threatened or endangered wildlife, sometimes the only practical way for state or federal management agencies to deal with them (and therefore the way required by the Endangered Species Act) is for animal-control professionals retained by state or federal resources agencies to shoot them in the head with rifles, a form of euthanasia approved as humane by the American Veterinary Medical Association. This approach is certainly kinder to the cats than stressing them with traps, transport, and eventually and almost inevitably lethal injection at shelters." While I do agree that is is stressful and horrible to trap the cats only to take them to be euthanized, I think the best thing to do while they are trapped is to spay and neuter them, not kill them!

New Book about a blind kitty is super!! Check out "Homer's Odyssey."

Inline Image

A new book just out by Gwen Cooper recounts the story of her rescued kitty, Homer, who she took in when he was only three weeks old.  The abandoned kitten was eyeless and had little hope of surviving due to his sorry start in life.  But not only did he survive and render his handicap little more than an inconvenience, Homer also flourished and taught the humans in his life valuable lessons that depended on more than being able to see.  If you would like to read more about this phenomenal kitty, check out Gwen Cooper's web site  and find a synopsis of the book at Random House

Darcy and "Lance" have found their fur-ever home!!

Inline Image

We did everything to help Darcy and Delancey, two little black kittens who were abandoned in the woods on a rural road, find their forever home.  We dressed them in rabbit ears at Easter.  We made them wear bandanas and pose for multiple pictures.  We posted them on our web site and in our newsletter and still they waited. Well, their wait is finally over as they found their home last month with the Clingman family who did not care a bit that they were black or a little shy.  Delancey, who is now named Lance, (those two "D" names were just too much of a tongue twister for Dad Roger) has shown what a laidback sweetie he is.  And Miss Darcy is being her "diva" self in her new home.  We just want to thank the Clingmans for giving these two such a super home!!

A good friend of ours in Plain City is selling his house. He is a Puli dog trainer who has won numerous awards for showing his dogs.  His house, an enormous 3 level split on 1.4 acres with eight indoor/outdoor dog runs, is the perfect place for dog lovers.  An extra addition was added on several years ago to provide a place for the kennels and for the dogs to hang out. You enter the dog area from the house by crossing through the two car garage. The dog area has an office, its own kitchen, a living room, bathroom, and the kennels--plus a private entrance!! The house would be excellent for anyone who has dogs or cats!
